hey all! great forum u guys have here... I too am on the quest to catch halis, but I'm in the bay area so our beaches aren't as nice as the ones down south. I run the same set up recommended here lami xcf 705r/curado e5 and i started on a lami steelhead/citca 200 and boy what a difference. I have not caught a halibut yet (except for accidental ones on bait when targeting other things and none keepers) but this set up has worked great on striped bass. I use flash minnows and pointers and have caught not only linesiders but leopard sharks and smelt.
