Hard & Soft Features of a Halibut
December 18, 2008
This is a clip of a 30″ halibut to further explain the importance of proper tackle:
- Hard and thick “lips” of a halibut - complete hook penetration is nearly impossible with #6 and #4 treble hooks (most commonly used on hardbaits).
- The “cheek” area is thin and soft. There is no middle grounds for an ideal place for a hook to get attached. The mouth is either too hard or too soft.
- Soft skin of the “belly” and “neck” area as halibut are often foul-hooked along these areas.
- Lateral line (sensory organ).
- The fan shaped tail.
- An example of how a halibut can be foul-hooked.
