Hard Jerkbait: Weight Shifting

Hard Jerkbait: Weight ShiftingMany hard jerkbaits on the market today are constructed with some sort of internal weight transfer system. After the initial cast, the weights will be positioned at the tail end of the bait. The weight at the tail will hinder the natural action of the lure as the tail end becomes heavier than the rest of the body.

To shift the weights towards the head of the bait follow these procedures:

  • After the initial cast, retrieve any slack line.
  • Lower the rod tip below the waist level and
  • Quickly jerk/snap your rod ONCE.
  • Begin a slow and steady retrieve.

The sudden jerk and pause of the lure will shift the weight from the tail to the head and will help in the movement of the rest of the body.
